Simon Simoudis - Richmond vs Geelong: The Cats’ Statement Win
The outcome of the match between the Richmond Football Club and the Geelong Cats was on expected lines. The Geelong Cats have been among the best. On Saturday, August 23, in the packed MCG stadium, the Geelong Cats defeated the Richmond Football Club with a huge margin. The final score was 103-64 in the Cats’ favour. I, Simon Simoudis, couldn’t make it to the MCG, but I could feel the vibes of the packed venue.
With this win, the Cats have secured their position for the final round. Simon Simoudis, like most Australians, somehow expected the final outcome, but we didn’t think it would be so one-sided.
With this loss, the Tigers are no longer in the argument. But when you watch them playing, you realize that they didn’t put any extra effort to give the opponents a run for their money. But the Cats simply outclassed them. And with this win, the Cats have not only secured their place, but they have also got the momentum for the final match.
The Cats controlled the match from the very beginning. They took an early lead, and the gap between the two teams increased as the match progressed. They are never losing their grip to the extent that the Cats kept Richmond without a goal for almost 70 minutes. And this was made possible mostly because of Tom Stewart’s brilliant defence. He has been in top form in the tournament. And his teammates Bailey Smith and Max Holmes ensured Cat’s power in the midfield. As a result, the Cats had maximum possession. But everything was not perfect, the Cats could have scored more, but on many occasions they were inaccurate.
Maurice Rioli jnr and Toby Nankervis from Richmond also played very well. Their determination kept the hopes of their team alive. But their individual intensity wasn’t enough.
Many records were broken during this match, and all of them by the Cats. Tom Atkins broke the previous record of 202 tackles in a season. Jeremy Cameron scored his 700th career goal. And when he did that, the whole stadium shouted, no matter which side they were supporting.
Although the Cats have secured their place for the finals, they do not know who their opponents will be. The matches this weekend will decide that.
As for Richmond, they will return home with the realization that they have to work very hard if they want to see themselves among the best teams. Because the gap between them and the best ones is huge.
I, Simon Simoudis, didn’t enjoy this match as much as I did yesterday. Yesterday’s match between the Panthers and the Raiders was absolutely brilliant. Even so, I am excited about the fact that some great teams are reaching the finals. And for me, the countdown has already begun.
